Camp Quarantine Week 2: Ocean

Makers Monday

I had planned to have the kids make tidepool aquariums but our plans were doomed by June gloom. Whomp whomp.

Tasty Tuesday
Make sushi

This activity was a BIG HIT with Parker. He loved making his own lunch. I purchased everything at our local H Mart (Korean market) and now we own bamboo rolling mats and can make sushi at home anytime! I picked up some teriyaki chicken to make this extra kid and budget friendly.

Whatever Wednesday
Watercolor seahorses

Much of our camp activities are determined by the craft supplies I already have on hand. I had watercolors from a game I set up for my BFFs baby shower so we made water color seahorses inspired by Hello Wonderful

Thinking and Thoughtful Thursday
Beach clean up

My co camp director totally failed and at the beach clean up part and let the kids go directly into the water to boogie board. Something things don't go as planned but you just have to roll with it.

Fun Friday
Wooden wiggle fish

This was a fun and quick project inspired by Oriental Trading using acrylic paints I already had. I ordered the wiggle fish from Amazon thinking it was a 6 pack. I was wrong. The fish model was 6 and there was only 1 fish. Learn from my mistake! You can get similar "wiggle" ocean animals at Hobby Lobby for cheap. Don't forget that 40% coupon!

In addition to the crafts and activities we do throughout the week, Parker always write prompts based on the week's theme. Enjoy this illustration by P. The prompt was "If you lived in the ocean, what animal would you be?" He picked a shrimp.

Outpost Summer Camp Recap

It seems fitting that I am posting pictures from Parker's time at Outpost Summer Camp on the last day of August. Summer is OVAH and I am ecstatic. Summer is great and all but I love Fall with all it's pumpkin-everything goodness and sweater weather. Let's give summer on last hurrah by enjoying these pictures of Parker from his first summer camp experience.

I'm not going to lie, summer camp caused a little anxiety for me. This was the first time Parker would be eating on his own and I was really worried. Turns out I had nothing to worry about and he had THE BEST time running around with his little camp friends and his counselor Miss Kelsey.

One of my favorite things about Outpost is that they have an app where they post pictures of what the kids did throughout the day. All of the photos in this post are from the app. I loved being able to see the pictures and then hearing stories from Parker about the crafts projects that he worked on, looking for lizard eggs and making mud pies. The app also sent reminders about special events like sports day and tie dye day. It was very convenient!

Parker had a great time at camp and the Merrell sandal tan to prove it. We will definitely be signing him up for camp again next summer!

San Diego Movies in the Park

Looking for some free family fun? Summer movies in the park has just started again. We really wanted to go to one of these screenings last year but unfortunately never got around to it. Now that Parker is old enough to sort of sit through an entire movie, we are totally taking him.

[Via SD Tourism Authority website]

Things are kicking off May 22 with a screening of Finding Nemo at the Waterfront Park downtown. The event will run from 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM. BYO chair, blankets and jackets. Food will be available from the concessions stand or food truck. Hope to see you there!

Other outdoor movie experiences to consider this summer:

Flicks on the Bricks at the Athenaeum in La Jolla

Movies by the Lake in Santee

Stone Movie Nights at Stone Brewery

2015 Summer Beach Looks for Boys

Our Cabo vacation flights and hotel are officially booked! I can't wait to spend a few relaxing days with some of my most favorite people in Mexico this summer. Now that the big stuff is out of the way, it's time to plan all the little (and not so little) details. On the to do list: work on the itinerary, get Parker a passport, look into travel gear for kids and, the best part of all, plan our outfits. I can just see little man splashing in the pool or hanging out on the beach in any of these outfits. I'm so excited for this big 30th birthday trip!

Mini Me Look Inspired by a Hawaiian Shirt

Last summer my MIL bought Parker a whole bunch of Hawaiian shirts and my reaction was, "Uhhhh...how do I style these?!" Well Mamas, now I know. I love the rolled sleeves and the slightly throwback look that this handsome fella is rocking. Get the look below.

PS
Today is the last day of swim class! No more chlorine hair until the end of the month. Woo hoo!

Mini Me Look Inspired by Bruno Mars

I'm loving the boat shoes and nautical striped shirt on Bruno Mars in this photo for GQ. Let's be honest, he would probably look amazing in any outfit but this one translates into a effortlessly stylish mini me look that is perfect for summer.

Parker's First Swim Class

After much preparation and worry, we have survived Parker's first swim class! The class was held at the private residence of Miss K who generously volunteers her time to teaching kids how to swim. Parker clung to me so tightly I had to pry him off my body but he was able to "swim" once I let him go. It's incredible that he instinctively knew to reach for the edge and for my hands under the water. As Kim promised, there were plenty of tears. We were a little late so his cute swim trunks didn't make it on. The more I think about it, the more I want to just get these. So much more comfy. Hopefully the next lesson will go over a little easier.

Things I need to do
1. Buy another swim diaper just in case he has an accident
2. Get control of my hair

Side note, at dinner Parker saw some flowers and said "BONG" (flower in Vietnamese). This kid will never stop surprising me with how much he knows.

[Reeeaacch. At one point he was crying so loud both the dogs came over to check on him.]

[The anxiety on his face is classic]

[At the end of the lesson Kim had him swim to the top step. He was able to reach for it and push his body out of the water.]

[A proud mama and teacher!]

Mini Me Look - Aztec Tank

Summer is officially here. We are noshing on strawberries and going to the park at 7 PM. You know what that means? Suns out guns out. You. Are. Welcome. Here's a fun and comfy look that's perfect for a cool kid play date.

PS It was nearly impossible to find a aztec print toddler tank. Don't they know that boys can wear things that don't have stripes on them? Sames goes for the baby boy espadrilles. Sheesh.

UPDATE:

I just stumbled upon the StrawberryMoth shop on etsy and she sells these great geo print tanks for kids. Here other stuff is pretty great too.

Pineapples are the Fruit of Summer 2014

Is it me or are pineapples everywhere these days? They are so in right now and I think it's safe to say that that they are the print to be wearing this summer. Ready. Set. Shop.

Update: Better Homes and Gardens agrees with me about the pineapple trend.

Not included on my kiddie board are:

1. This awesome pineapple silhouette tank from Geo Fox Apparel that is sold out.

2. This great womens pineapple print bikini from top shop.

3. This charming watecolor print from etsy shop SnoogsandWilde.

4. This set of yellow notecards from etsy shop mipluseddesign.

5. Let's not forget dad! I'm really into this pineapple print mens shirt from Forever21. Tuan would never wear this.

Swim Lessons are Upon Us

I've scoured the interwebz researching what we will need in preparation for Parker's swim lessons which start next month. I can't believe we are so close to summer! Below are my picks for the essentials required for a successful swim lesson experience.

Mamas: If anyone has any advice please chime in!

Congrats Tuyen & Andy!

All I have are photos of the church ceremony because we had so much fun during the reception we didn't have time to take photos! Congrats Tuyen and Andy! The next major family event is Quyen and Phil's wedding next April.
